This is the first time the Irish language will be used in a British coronation.

An Irish hymn will be sung at the Coronation of King Charles III, the Archbishop of Canterbury confirmed.

According to a spokesperson for the archbishop, the traditional languages spoken in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will be used during the coronation.

"I am delighted that the service will recognise and celebrate tradition, speaking to the great history of our nation, our customs, and those who came before us," said Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

"At the same time, the service contains new elements that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society."

The traditional hymn Veni Creator - Come Creator Spirit will be sung after Saturday's sermon. The congregation gathered at Westminster Abbey will hear three Celtic languages - Welsh, Scots Gaelic and Irish - alongside English.

The hymn has been used in coronations since the 14th century, but this will be the first time it has been sung in English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish.

President Michael D Higgins will also make history as the first Irish head to state to attend the crowning of a British monarch. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is also due to attend.

The President and King Charles met ahead of the coronation to discuss Ireland and Britain’s “uniqyely close relationship”.

Others attending First Minister (Designate) of Northern Ireland, Michelle O'Neill.

The Sinn Féin deputy leader has said she recognises "there are many people on our island for whom the coronation is a hugely important occasion."
