Adoptions of children from Vietnam are to resume almost immediately.
It comes after a new agreement was signed in Dublin today.
It is good news for 18 families who were on the brink of an adoption when it was suspended pending the ratification of the convention.
And another 200 families have also progressed through the system so that they could soon adopt a child from Vietnam.
The new adoption means the resumption of adoptions with the country after they were suspended 3 years ago.
It comes after the signing up to the Hague Convention by the Republic of Vietnam earlier this year.
Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald says it will mean the resumption of adoptions almost immediately.
She adds that this puts high standards and best international practice in place.
