A special forum will get underway later to discuss the challenges and changes in the Irish welfare state.
The event takes place at Maynooth University this morning, and will include addresses from key note speakers Kevin Farnsworth and Zoe Irving from York University.
They will look at the privatisation of services for the long-term unemployed and programmes that subsidise wages for low-paid workers.
It is in preparation for a book on the subject, which is due to be released next year.
Dr Mary Murphy is a sociology lecturer at Maynooth University.
She believes information is key in tackling the issue.
