An Irish woman has died after she was struck by a bus in Peru.

It happened in the early hours of Monday morning in the city of Trujillo.

Local media reports say the 35-year-old had been living and working in the city as an English teacher.

It is understood the bus failed to remain at the scene.

Police arrived shortly afterwards and cordoned off the scene.

The woman’s body was removed to the central morgue in the city.

The Department of Foreign Affairs told Newstalk it was providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.
