An Irishman has been arrested by police investigating the murder of an Irishwoman at a hotel in Spain.

Police said they were called to the hotel in Salou, near Barcelona shortly after 10:30pm last night.

When they arrived, they found a woman lying on the floor with a man next to her.

Emergency services attempted to revive the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local police then arrested the man on suspicion of murder.

He is now being questioned and is expected to appear before a judge in Spain later today.
