Given the wintery conditions we are experiencing here in Ireland, it is very easy to be jealous of the fact that it is summer in Australia and New Zealand. While we're wrapping up, they are making the most of their scorching summer conditions.

One Irishman in Waikato, New Zealand decided to make the most out of the summer weather, and decided to head out for a day's kayaking.

Unfortunately, when securing the kayak to the top of his car, he tied it crossways - in essence, extending the width of his car by several feet. Practically and in safety terms, this is not the most sensible way of securing a kayak - which one would have hoped would have gone without saying.

As you would expect, he was immediately pulled over by police when spotted.

Inspector Freda Grace - District Road Policing Manager - said "regardless that this is a busy, winding rural road already subject to busier than usual traffic flows over the summer, the driver was unrepentant telling the officer that stopped him that if he secured the kayak long-ways as he is supposed to it would cause damage to the roof of his car.

"To make matters worse the Tairua officer was already on her way to a vehicle crash and this driver's behaviour could very easily have caused another. Imagine if he encountered a cyclist driving like this?" she added.
