/> An Irish man has died while attempting to swim the English Channel to raise funds for charity.

42 year old Paraic Casey from Passage West in Cork became ill last night,  when he was just one kilometre from the French shore.

Efforts were made to resuscitate him, but he died.

He undertook the swim to raise funds for the St Vincent de Paul and Marymount Hospice.

Paraic was a member of Sandycove Island Swimming Club.
/> The Department of Foreign Affairs says it’s providing consular assistance to his family.
