An Irishman is in serious condition following an accident in Spain.

The holidaymaker is reported to have fallen from a balcony in the Costa del Sol area of Marbella in the early hours of Friday morning.

Local media outlet Sur said the 23-year-old was hospitalised after suffering injuries to his face, head and knee.

He is believed to have been staying in an apartment along Marbella's seafront promenade with his girlfriend, who is also Irish. 

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the man's family.
