Years and years of advice warning us against the evils of butter and its high-fat, high-salt, heart-attack-producing properties have all been thrown out the window today.

Apparently its not really that bad for you after all!

In fact the real danger lies in the low-fat, healthy butter substitutes many of us turned to in our desperate search for a healthy alternative.

It appears now that we've actually been damaging our bodies and should never have truned our back on good oul butter.

A study (by the US Government's National Institutes of Health in Maryland) has found that an ingredient in vegetable fat triggers 'inflammation' and that this plays a major role in heart disease.

The report compared results of a study from the 1960's with those of today and found no evidence of the benefits of replacing saturated fats with vegetable fats.

In fact, results found replacing animal with vegetable fats actually increased your risk of heart disease.

But butter users aren't let off the hook completely either. Whatever 'fat' you choose, you are still advised to use it sparingly.

Instead of frying flavour into your food, you should grill, bake or steam the flavour out of it (just a little pro-frying humour).

So what has been learned today? Butter is back on the table but just try not to use it....
