Cork musician Cian Ducrot has said “it feels surreal” to have won his first Grammy Award.
The singer-songwriter took home the ‘Best R&B Song’ gong for co-writing the SZA performed track ‘Saturn’.
Mr Ducrot was made famous for his singing and songwriting through TikTok, with his debut album Victory released in October of 2023 to chart topping success.
The musician received the RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Irish Song of the Year with his track ‘Heaven’ and has since played a series of high-profile concerts in Ireland and abroad.
On The Hard Shoulder, Mr Ducrot said it “feels surreal” and “crazy” to have won the award.
“I'm still trying to celebrate it and take it in, to be honest, just making the most of every moment,” he said.
“I obviously had an amazing day at the Grammys and we celebrated, having dinners and parties and just making the most of it and really trying to take it all in.”
Mr Ducrot said to have won a Grammy for songwriting is “the biggest honour” of his life.
“I'm a songwriter and it's my craft and my art, as well as being a performer,” he said.
“I think a lot of the time as an artist and a performer, you don't get the respect that songwriters do when they're not artists or performers, you know, it's just as important to me.
“I really pride myself on my songwriting and my ability to write music and compose music, and so to be honoured with a songwriting Grammy is the highest recognition I could get.
“It means a lot to me.”
Mr Ducrot said the “secret sauce” to writing a Grammy Award winning song is to write it with SZA.
“She's the greatest songwriter I've ever witnessed in my entire life,” he said.
“Without her, there's no song.
“She's just a master of songwriting and of her own sound and her storytelling.
“I helped in any way that I could and, you know, I'm singing background vocals on it, and I gave ideas and suggestions and was part of the process but like it's her music, you know, and she's driving that.”
Mr Ducrot said “not all artists” are as involved in the songwriting process as SZA.
“Not all artists write but SZA writes and she writes like no one I've ever seen,” he said.
“It blew my mind being in that room with her, let alone [winning] a Grammy for it - I would have just settled with the opportunity of working with SZA and being able to be there and aid in the song.”
Mr Ducrot said he didn’t expect the reaction he received from the Irish people.
“I didn't expect this at all [and] I just didn't really think about it all what would happen if I did win and how people [at home] would react,” he said.
“It's been crazy just to see the response and like, how proud and happy everyone is.
“I didn't really think that anyone would care that much, to be honest, but it's obviously a crazy thing - it's a Grammy - and it's obviously a huge achievement as a songwriter.
“To have that love and that support and that response from everyone around friends and family and back home in Ireland and in the even in the songwriter community, it just is really special to have that recognition.”
Mr Ducrot said he feels “really blessed” and added that he has already been in the studio working on new music.
