A Sinn Féin TD says a threatening call his office received is not out of the ordinary, but Gardaí are investigating.
Sligo-Leitrim Deputy Martin Kenny earlier confirmed a gun threat was made to his office in Leinster House.
He says a person rang the office on Tuesday morning and made general threats to the political establishment.
But he told Lunchtime Live these calls have to be investigated.
"It would be regular that we would get calls from people who have issues with either An Garda Síochána or the Courts Services or something else where they'd have some gripe or they'd feel they were badly treated.
"And in those situations they would be angry sometimes and frustrated, and have maybe reported to GSOC and nothing happened.
"Sometimes it's quite legitimate and sometimes it's not, sometimes it's very bogus but we get quite a lot of calls like that.
"Often [people ask] 'What are you going to do about it?' and when you try to explain to them there's very little you can do... they can get angry with you".
He says he received a call at 11.00am from someone "who were coherent and sounded stable and sensible for the first part of the call.
"And then they went down this track where they talked about threatening the local Gardaí in their local town that had done nothing to help them.
"And that they were going to go and shoot the Gardaí, they said, and then they said that they were also going to attack Leinster House if that didn't work."
'Very often people talk'
His parliamentary assistant took the call and managed to get information as to the caller's identity.
"Then she contacted the Oireachtas management and the Gardaí themselves, just in case this person is one of these wild and weird people that does something.
"Very often people talk, and that's all they do".
And he says the threat was very general in nature: "It's an example of the kind of stuff that's going on.
"It wasn't a threat toward me, or toward any particular person - but the threat was made to a person in my office.
"But it was really a threat against the Gardaí and against the general political establishment".
He says Gardaí are investigating the incident, and he understands officers know who the person is.
