Newlywed Des Bishop has said his marriage to an American was “an accident”.
Although born in the United States, Des went to secondary school in Ireland and has spent most of his life on this side of the Atlantic.
Since meeting his wife Hannah Berner, the comedian has been spending more and more time in his native New York - but he still feels Ireland is home.
“I’ve been in the States more recently - but I still have a house here,” he told The Anton Savage Show.
“I don’t mentally like to say that I’m in the States more - I feel like I haven’t made that transition in my mind.
“But I married a Yank, so I’m in the States more.”
The couple met on Instagram at a time when meeting in person was difficult.
“[Marrying an American] was an accident,” he said.
“I did leave Ireland for the pandemic - which was actually a good call; it was easier where I was - despite the carnage at the beginning.
“New York was a better choice - we met during that time.”
Like Des, Hannah is a comedian and he finds dating someone with the same job an interesting experience.
“I’ve never dated a comedian; my wife is the only comedian I’ve ever dated,” he said. “It’s very like any relationship where you’re both in the same job.
“In my opinion, it’s a positive because you have all this stuff in common to talk about.
“Sometimes it’s just a fun gossip and then, on the other side, you actually help each other with material.
“But you’re not trying to make each other laugh or anything.”
Des Bishop is performing his Mama Mia tour in Dublin on April 19th.
