Tonight, Colin Farrell will go up against Andrew Scott for Best Actor in the Golden Globes television category – but is the ceremony worth the watch?
Irish viewers can access the event through Paramount+ - though film critic Brian Lloyd told The Anton Savage Show that they shouldn’t bother.
“So, the difference between the Oscars and the Globes is, first of all, they come first – and they include TV as well,” he said.
“The other thing that kind of separates the Golden Globes from all the other award ceremonies is that the Golden Globes is basically a load of cr*p.
“It’s absolute muck – I mean, it is held in such contempt by the people that actually participate in it that for years they’ve really viewed it as a booze cruise and nothing else.”
According to Mr Lloyd, this is because the organisation that used to run the event was massively controversial within the world of film.
“Up until like, three, four years ago, the Golden Globes was run by this organisation called the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which as far back as like 1958 had massive controversies over basically being a play all organisation,” he said.
“They were basically handing out awards to anyone that would look at them with a bit of a glint in their eye.
“At one point, there was one president, a guy called Henry Gris, that actually resigned – he was the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
"He resigned saying, 'This whole thing is just a complete cod'.”
The host
The host of the show this year will be Nikki Glaser, but Mr Lloyd said he doubts she’ll take the job too seriously.
“Even the host of the show is fully aware of what a load of bollocks this whole thing is and takes the p*ss out of it as they’re going along,” he said.
“So, I would imagine Nikki Glaser is going to have a similarly cynical attitude to the awards ceremony.”
Mr Lloyd said he doubts Colin Farrell will be in for a win this time around.
