The €335,000 cost of constructing a new bike shed at Leinster House is “concerning,” according to a leading journalist.
The shed can store 18 bikes and a breakdown of its cost from the Office of Public Works (OPW) revealed that €3,000 was spent on archaeological services.
A further €11,000 was paid for quantity surveying costs, while €222,282 was spent on the main construction and installation.

'Concerning'
On The Hard Shoulder today, Irish Examiner political correspondent Michelle McLean described the cost as “concerning.”
“It has raised some eyebrows around the place… it’s very expensive bike storage,” she said.
“Minister Ryan was speaking earlier today and did say there were questions that need to be answered by the OPW on this.
“He said it seemed incredibly expensive.
“He had been very much in favour of the installation of the bike shed, but he was only made aware of the cost, seemingly, yesterday.”
She added that “at least [the bike shed] will be used,” unlike the printer that cost the State over a million euro in 2019, which was ultimately too large to fit inside the room where it was to be used in the Dáil.
