Two teenagers killed following an e-scooter crash in Waterford have been named locally.
Gilbert Collins (15) and Abuzwa Idris (17) died in the crash between an e-scooter and a bus in Waterford city early on Thursday morning.
Gardaí said it happened on the R680 Cork Road in Waterford city shortly before 2.10am.
One of the boys on the e-scooter was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to Waterford University Hospital where he later died.
The bus was empty apart from the driver who was uninjured.
Waterford Mayor Jason Murphy told Newstalk Breakfast the community is in shock.
"When this story broke yesterday morning I don't think anyone could believe it," he said.
"The two boys came from Ballybeg - a strong, working class community here in Waterford.
"The whole community's been under a cloud since yesterday. We can only imagine what both families are going through".
Mayor Murphy said Gilbert attended the local school of St Paul's and had just completed his Junior Cert.
"It's very hard for us to comprehend still in Waterford that both of them have been taken away in such tragic circumstances," he said.
He added that he hopes the bus driver "get[s] the supports that he needs over the coming days and weeks".
"It's just awful - three families probably destroyed by what happened early Thursday morning here," he added.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was travelling on the Cork Road in Waterford city between 1.45am and 2.15am and may have camera footage.
