The Israeli Daily, a satirical website that ridicules political and religious leaders of all sides says it is not intimidated by the recent attack on the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists in France.
Speaking on The Green Room, co-founder and editor Alexander Giles said the website’s founding principle was that it “is fair and reasonable to criticise Israeli policy, Egyptian policy, Syrian policy or any government.”
“It’s right and proper that we skewer everybody as any good satirical website would do.”
The site which is registered in Tel Aviv began during the outbreak of some of the worst violence between Israel and Palestine last year.
Giles said it struck them as a good time to start a satirical site because of the extremist views being expressed.
“There was a lot of extreme views on both sides ... it was a great moment to come out and criticise all sides ... and poke fun at both sides.”
“We don’t think loss of life is funny in any way. We are talking about the policy of governments and it's the extreme views on all sides that we try to poke fun of.”
The editor said they had spoken with their own writing staff following the Charlie Hebdo attacks but did not feel intimidated about continuing with their work.
“I believe in free speech. While you can respect religion, I don’t think it’s reasonable not to do something because of the threat of violence.”
