Holding more events outdoors could be ‘transformative’ for Ireland – if the funding existed.

Lunchtime Live host Andrea Gilligan recently visited Zurich in Switzerland and got a taste of how other cities use outdoor spaces.

She recalled coming across an opera house in the city – where “thousands” were gathered outside to watch a live screening of the show from a park outside.

“Could you imagine something like that in Dublin?” she said.

“It did make me think - why don’t we have more areas like [that]” she said. “Why don’t we utilise them more?

“How can we make the most out of the public spaces that we have?

“Maybe this is why they talked about the [College] Green Plaza idea – until I saw it borne out in reality over the weekend, I didn’t know how I felt about it.

“Now, I think it’s a great idea.”

Alternative Dublin founder Dublin McCleary said there are “so many spaces” in Dublin that could be used for more events.

“We could use Phoenix Park, the space by Wellington’s Monument,” he said.

“Wood Quay by Dublin City Council, Temple Bar, Iveagh Gardens, Merrion Square.”

The issue with holding more outdoor events, however, is the risk involved.

Mr McCleary said costs are “through the roof” and more State funding is required.

“If we run an event and it fails, it’d tank the company,” he said.

“There's a lot of people who want to do stuff, but the cost is so high.”

Events like this would increase footfall across the city, bringing people from parks to restaurants and bars, according to Mr McCleary.

Getting outdoors

Drama and Theatre professor Dr Miriam Haughton said the issue of outdoor events is not just about funding but mindset as well.

“Getting an understanding across the top level of Government that the arts are for all quarters of society and not just for a modest arts minority,” she said.

“It’s a complete transformation for how funding of the arts is supported by different sectors of society.

“Until we crack that nut we’re not going to make it.”

The Government has introduced other measures for the arts such as basic income and increased funding for venues – but Dr Haughton said it must also consider day-to-day cultural events.
