A homeless mother who is living with Stage 4 cancer has said her housing situation is a "constant daily blow in the face".

Andrea Clarke was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and had a mastectomy.

She was re-diagnosed in September 2020 when the cancer returned.

She told Lunchtime Live the later diagnosis happened accidentally.

"I fell roller-skating and it was discovered in my right hip," she said.

Andrea said there were a few other "spots" in her bones, "but it's not a curable type of cancer".

"I'm on oral chemotherapy... it's like living with a chronic illness, but I'll never be in remission.

"My health is just causing a lot of difficulties in my life, financially, as well as other things."

'A constant daily blow'

Andrea said her health is "way down on the list" owing to looking after her teenage children.

"I've two teenage kids, they're 13 and 14, so me and my health come way down on the list, and that's not ideal.

"It's causing stress to me, again that's not good for my health, and then the whole situation of being homeless that's just a constant daily blow in the face that I have nowhere for myself and my children to live."

Andrea is living in her sister's house which she said is "not ideal".

"I'm just trying to find out what I can do, how I can move forward," she said.

"I've been to see financial advisers, I've been to see pension advisers - I do have a company pension, I've been with the same company for 19 years.

"I'm literally exploring every single avenue.

"My situation I just think is so unfair, and to be dealing with Stage 4 cancer and all this on top of it can get very overwhelming.

"I'm very much a type of person where I like to stand on my own two feet, but sometimes I can't... it's way too much."

'It's me fighting everything'

Andrea said their family home was sold previously as part of her divorce, something she regrets.

"I agreed to sell the family home; if I'd have known then the difficulties I would have had, I would have absolutely 100% fought to keep the family home," she said.

"I did not know I'd have such difficulty securing myself a home, either through conventional means or else through county councils supports."

Andrea said she feels like she has to keep fighting.

"I'm on my own, I'm single so you're dealing with this all on your own," he said.

"It's literally me fighting everything to get a home.

"I've no choice but to just keep up and keep going - I literally don't have a choice.

"I do have the money from the sale of the family home, so it's not as though I don't have a deposit, but it's not near enough to buy a house outright."

"I just pretend everything's fine, but underneath it all I'm panicking," she added.
