Advanced works have begun on the restoration of restoration of the Iveagh Markets in Dublin 8.
Dublin City Council (DCC) says these works will include the removal of loose materials, the installation of safe access routes and the removal of vegetation.
Francis Haughey Building Contractors have been tasked with the job which is expected to take eight weeks to complete.
The historic site, which has been derelict since 1996, received a funding allocation of €9m last year from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).
The works at Iveagh Markets are stage 2 of an overall repair programme that will include extensive roof repairs, the removal of lead paint and the installation of rainwater disposal systems.
In a statement released today, DCC said they are currently “involved in a number of legal proceedings in relation to the Iveagh Markets” and are unable to make further comments on the matter.
The Iveagh Market is a protected structure that was developed by the Guinness family and first opened in 1907.
A future role for the old trading ground has not yet been made clear by the local authority.
