Jack was the most popular name for Irish boys for the fifth year in a row, with Emily securing the top place for girls for the second consecutive year.

Figures released today by the Central Statistics Office show that out of 72,225 births, 831 new baby Jacks made it the most popular boys’ name, with the top five names remaining unchanged.

Since 2007, Jack, James, Daniel, Sean and Conor have been the top five names. Only their order has changed.

Evie is skyrocketing in popularity as a girls’ name, rising 40 places to 84th position.

It was among five other new girls’ names to make the list, including Amelie, Hanna, Maisie and Rose.

Isaac, Danny and Logan were the new boys’ names to appear in the Top 100.

Some Irish names improved in popularity but over the past six years names like Aaron, Eimear, Orla, and Cathal have generally moved down the list.

Names such as Oisin and Aoibhinn are climbing.
