A man has been found guilty of murdering his wife in Mayo five years ago.
James Kilroy, of Kilbree Lower, Westport, County Mayo, had claimed he was suffering from a mental disorder when he killed his wife Valerie French-Kilroy at their home just outside Westport.
The jurors had to consider whether cannabis-induced psychosis satisfied the criteria needed for a special verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
In the end, after deliberating for just over two hours, they rejected his defence and convicted him of murder.
On the 14th of June 2019, James Kilroy was found running naked through some fields, claiming he was on a mission from God.
He told Gardaí he’d killed his wife, Valerie French-Kilroy, by stabbing her in the back after a fight.
Soon afterwards, her body was found in a campervan in a shed at the back of their home, just outside Westport.
She had been beaten, stabbed and strangled to death.
James Kilroy admitted killing her but claimed he was suffering from a cannabis-induced psychosis at the time.
The jury has now rejected his defence and convicted him of murder.
This was Kilroy's third time to stand trial for the murder after the collapse of his first two trials.
He will be handed a life sentence on Monday.
