The killers of Jason Corbett are due for release from prison in the United States today.
The Limerick man was beaten to death at his home in North Carolina in August 2015 by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Tom.
A spokesperson for Jason's family has told the Irish Independent they are “deeply disappointed” by their impending release today.
“Despite the gravity of their crime and the immense loss they inflicted, they will be freed after serving just four years and three months,” they said.
“Their lack of remorse for the irreparable harm caused to Jason’s children, whom they callously orphaned, is a stark reminder to all of their callous disregard for human life and decency.
“Justice is twofold for criminals like Tom and Molly Martens. While they may have completed the court-mandated sentence, they now carry the enduring burden of their actions – forever knowing they extinguished a noble life.
“We know the truth, they know the truth. Soon the world will know the entire truth.”
The Martens were convicted of Mr Corbett’s murder in 2017 and were sentenced to a minimum of 20 years behind bars and a maximum of 25.
The pair continued to maintain they acted out of self-defence and the verdict was overturned by the North Carolina Supreme Court.
In 2023, the Martens agreed a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid a retrial and entered guilty pleas on the charge of manslaughter.
In November, they received sentences of four years and seven months - but were given credit for the time they had already spent in prison.
