Despite a rocky year involving pay disparity and nude image leaks in two separate hacking incidents, the odds were still in Jennifer Lawrence’s favour as the actress proved the top-grossing movie star of 2014.
Forbes magazine used box office statistics to work out its list, with Lawrence lording it over the global cinema market with two Hunger Games movies and X-Men: Days of Future Past paving the way for J-Law’s dominance. The latest edition to the Marvel franchise also helped push Irish actor Michael Fassbender into the list, coming in ninth.
Chris Pratt, whose breakout year as a movie star saw critically acclaimed turns in The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, came in second, while Scarlett Johansson was third. The rest of the line-up included Mark Wahlberg, Chris Evans, Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Hugh Jackman.
The Forbes’ list doesn’t reflect how much the actors’ earnings reflect their box office return, however. Jennifer Lawrence was second to Sandra Bullock for the last 12 months, while eight male actors earned more her (Robert Downey Jr, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Hemsworth, Liam Neeson, Ben Affleck, and Christian Bale).
