Concerns are being raised after a Jewish student was attacked in a Dublin nightclub in a suspected hate crime.

The American student was targeted in November, during a night out at Flannery's.

The Gardaí are currently investigating the alleged attack, but if the case goes to court, it will become the first offence to be prosecuted under the new Hate Offences Act.

Crime expert Trina O'Connor has said the Occupations Territory Bill is causing some people to feel unsafe.

“From an Irish perspective, the statistics don't bear out that there is a rise in antisemitism,” she said.

“As recently as May, the President came out to reject that assertion by the Ambassador.

“The reality is that we do have an ongoing situation in Gaza, and I think that one of the things that is feeding into this is the ongoing support for the Occupations Territory Bill is causing some people to feel unsafe."

The Occupied Territories Bill would ban the import and sale of goods produced in settlements that are illegal under international law - including Gaza and the West Bank.

It has yet to be enacted.
