The gravestone of Jimmy Savile was removed overnight following a request by his family.
The gravestone is to be broken up and dumped after it was removed from a cemetery in Scarborough.
They say it is because they do not want to impact on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery and to ensure the dignity of others buried there.
The decision comes as police investigate claims that the late TV presenter abused up to 25 young girls over 40 years.
The BBC is to hold an inquiry into the sex abuse allegations against him.
But Director-General George Entwhistle says it will only happen after a criminal investigation has been conducted by the police.
He has also apologised to women who claim they were sexually abused by Savile.
A growing number of people claim a culture within the organisation allowed inappropriate behaviour to flourish.
Savile died in October last year at his home in Leeds at the age of 84.
Funeral Director Robert Morphet says they had to carefully choose the time when they took the gravestone away.
