A protest will take place in Limerick City this afternoon to appeal the terms of a sentence imposed on the killer of student journalist Joe Drennan.

21-year-old Kieran Fogarty of Ballinacurra Weston in Limerick was convicted of dangerous driving, causing the death of Mr Drennan (21) in 2023.

Fogarty had killed Mr Drennan while out on bail for shooting at the front of a house where children played.

He was sentenced to six and a half years, however, Fogarty’s sentence for killing Mr Drennan will run concurrently with his sentence for the shooting, meaning he will serve no extra time.

Co-Organiser of today's event Natasha O'Brien has said Mr Drennan's family has had no time to grieve.

"We're so angry that this family can't grieve because they have to fight for Joe," she said.

"We want to do everything we can to bring the public together to demand that we all step in and fight with this family because they need us, they need our support.

"Joe didn't deserve that, Joe did not deserve to be put alongside the gun charge, it cannot be accepted."

Ms O'Brien said she will speak at the event "in the sense of the justice system continuing to fail victims and survivors".

She said Joe was "so invaluable".

The Drennan family have set up a petition calling for current sentencing laws to be amended.

The petition calls on the Irish Government and the Minister for Justice to ensure that multiple sentences for serious crimes, particularly those involving loss of life, are served consecutively rather than concurrently.
