Gardaí have launched a fresh search for Icelandic man Jon Jonsson, five years after he disappeared in Dublin.
On February 9th, 2019, Mr Jonsson left his hotel in Santry and headed towards the nearby Santry Demesne Park.
No one has seen or heard from Mr Jonsson since then and Gardaí are still investigating what happened to him.
“He was last seen wearing a dark jacket, he’s 6ft tall of medium-build and short hair,” The Journal reporter Muiris O’Cearbhaill told Newstalk Breakfast.
“The Gardaí believe he only had the keycard to his room - which was in the Bonnington Hotel - and he was visiting Ireland at the time for a poker tournament that was ongoing in Dublin.”
Anonymous tip offs
Since his disappearance, Gardaí have established over 270 lines of inquiry and hours of CCTV footage have been painstakingly poured through.
The new search in Dublin was launched after Gardaí received two pieces of anonymous correspondence and investigators are now urging the senders to get in touch with them.
Mr O’Cearbhaill said the correspondence has “shaped” how Gardaí view this case.
“We’ve now got a second day of searches in Santry’s Demesne Park in Dublin,” Mr O’Cearbhaill said.
“It’s quite a large park; it has waterways, community gardens, gazebos and wooded areas.
“So, Gardaí from Ballymun Garda Station have allocated two days for the search.”
Mr Jonsson’s body was not found on the first day but there still a number of areas in the park yet to be searched.
“It’s quite a large-scale search,” Mr O’Cearbhaill said.
“It was reported yesterday that quite a number of dog units and diving units were joining the Ballymun Garda Station throughout the day.
“It is quite a large park, so you’d need two days for the search to take place.
“Gardaí say there aren’t any updates with regards to the search at this minute but we might have something later on.”
Mr Jonsson’s siblings, Anna Hildur and David Karl, travelled to Dublin last week to join Gardaí as they search for their brother.
