Frances Fitzgerald's comments were in response to the UN's Economic & Social Council's findings that Ireland's abortion laws are too restrictive.

The committee believe legislation is also unclear on the circumstances that allow a termination to be carried out.

It's calling on the Government to take "all necessary steps" - including a referendum - to allow wider access to terminations in line with international standards on human rights.
