The Justice Minister says there is "no hiding place" for anyone who has penalty points improperly quashed - after a new report showed six senior officers cancelled points against Garda policy.

The leaked report details 54 breaches of the penalty points system - which took place after the Garda Commissioner ordered the practice must stop.

The Minister says the report will be made public - and says it represents a "cultural shift" in monitoring Garda policy.

Frances Fitzgerald wouldn't be drawn on the details of the report - but says it shows there's nowhere to hide.

The Minister for Transport says a “zero tolerance” attitude will be taken to anything that affects the penalty points system.

Paschal Donohoe says he received the report today and that it will be discussed in full at cabinet next week.

“It’s absolutely vital that we have a zero tolerance attitude in place to any issues that might affect the credibility of penalty points and myself and Minister Fitzgerald are jointly committed to making sure that happens,” he said.

Ms Fitzgerald was attending two citizenship ceremonies which took place at the Convention Centre this morning but she said she wouldn't comment on the report until Tuesday.

Mick Clifford, Irish Examiner Special Correspondent, joined Jonathan Healy on Lunchtime today to discuss the report on penalty points and stated: "A number of senior gardai named in this report have retired since."

"In the great old Irish way, no one is really responsible."
