The Justice Minister has told the family of a cyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run that he will consider whether to hold a public inquiry.

Shane O’Farrell was 23-years-old in 2011 when he was hit and killed while out cycling in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan.

The driver of the car, Zigimantas Gradzuiska, failed to remain at the scene.

It emerged Gradzuiska had previous convictions at the time of the incident and a court ruling meant that he should have been in prison for breaches of previous bail conditions.

Shane’s family have been campaigning for a public inquiry into the circumstances around what happened for years.

Today, the family met with the Minister for Justice Jim O’ Callaghan about the likelihood of a public enquiry.

On The Hard Shoulder, Shane’s parents Lucia and Jim O’Farrell said after meeting with Minister O'Callaghan today, she is hopeful the Minister will agree to a public inquiry.

“He listened intently, he's very respectful, he said he hadn't made any decision yet what to do,” she said.

“He took on board what we had to say regarding bail and the problems with bail - which is a very current topic at the moment - regarding warrants [and] suspended sentences.

“You know… when a judge says, ‘Bring him back and I'll jail him’, how is a Garda not trained up to do that?”

Ms O’Farrell said the Minister has said he will come back to the family “with a decision”.

“There's a lot of public interest issues, so we addressed those, and he said, ‘Well look, I’ll think about it and I'll come back with a decision’.

“Now we didn't push him on when he'd come back to us, because I'm sure he's new in the job and he's probably under a lot of pressure.

“So he didn't rule out anything but he didn't commit either - so we're hopeful.”
