Police raided the property in Calabasas, near Los Angeles, over claims the 19-year-old star pelted his neighbour's house with eggs.

Lieutenant David Thompson, of Los Angeles County Sheriff, said the singer "has not been arrested, nor has he been exonerated" over the allegations.

However, his friend, Lil Za, a 20-year-old rapper whose real name is Xavier Smith, was held on suspicion of cocaine possession.

Lt Thompson confirmed Bieber's neighbour's house, which is made of imported wood and brick, suffered "extensive" damage when eggs were thrown at the property.The neighbour said he filmed the star attacking his property while he was on a balcony with his daughter, according to sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Entertainment website TMZ estimated the damage would cost around $20,000 (€14,664) to repair.

Bieber, who could face criminal charges because of the extent of the damage, is at home and is co-operating with detectives, Mr Whitmore said.

Lt Thompson did not confirm what evidence was taken from the Canadian star's house but said the emphasis was not on what was in his fridge.

"We didn't do this search warrant to send a message - that's not what we do," he added.

"This has nothing to do with him being a celebrity. This is a felony crime."

Bieber has had several run-ins with his neighbours in the past.

He allegedly spat at a fellow resident of his gated community after complaints about his driving, although prosecutors ruled there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges.

He was also embroiled in a number of controversies on his 2013 world tour, during which he lunged at a photographer, had his pet monkey seized at an airport and allegedly spray-painted the wall of a hotel.

Bieber's publicist Melissa Victor declined to comment on the egg-throwing allegations.
