The ‘Kardashianisation’ of society is a ‘road to unhappiness’, Shane Coleman has said.
For many members of Generation Z, ‘prevention is better than correction’ is the mantra when it comes to ageing and one study found they spend more on skincare products than any other age group.
Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, presenter Shane Coleman lamented the modern obsession with looks as a “narcissistic trend”.
“I think there’s something sad about Gen Z - young people in their 20s who are fresh faced and perfect - getting Botox in their 20s,” he said.
“It’s ‘Kardashianisation’ of society - everyone needs to be wrinkleless and hairless and have the perfect body.
“There’s a generic look that I personally don’t find particularly appealing.
“It creates huge pressure on young women and young men… and ultimately, I think it’s a road to unhappiness.”
Co-presenter and former GP Ciara Kelly said young people need to stop worrying so much about ageing.
“Yes, young people are using things like Botox [but] I think it’s probably more women my age who are really using it hand over fist,” she said.
“I know a huge amount of people who use it - maybe I should just say, I’ve used it myself.
“They use it [in a similar way] to getting your hair coloured, you do it every few months or whatever it is.
“I would think Botox in your twenties is foolish and not necessarily good for you, I don’t see any reason for it.”
Ciara conceded that many women feel pressured into getting treatment because of the man in their life.
“I would also say this, I know an awful lot of guys who go, ‘I hate when women get Botox, I hate when women get fillers,’” Ciara said.
“It’s like when guys say, ‘I hate when women wear makeup’ - but then if they see their girlfriend without makeup, they ask her if she’s sick.
“There’s loads of stuff that we [women] do to ourselves that you haven’t a clue about.”
According to Statista, the beauty market in Ireland is worth an estimated €1.1 billion.
