Wicklow councillors say they'll work to find an 'appropriate' tribute to Katie Taylor that satisfies both the boxer and the population of her hometown Bray.
Thousands of people turned out in Bray for Katie's homecoming yesterday, after she became undisputed lightweight world champion last weekend.
She claimed the undisputed title after defeating Belgian Delfine Persoon at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Following her professional success and her 2012 Olympic gold medal win, discussions have begun over a potential permanent to the champion boxer in her hometown.
One idea that has been proposed is a statue - although Katie herself might not support that particular idea at the moment.
Independent Councillor Joe Behan spoke to Newstalk Breakfast with Susan Keogh this morning following last night's triumphant homecoming.
He explained: "The statute idea came through a local online forum... a number of people had suggested it as something that should be considered. I thought it was a great idea myself.
"However, I did say - and I would always maintain - that something like that could only be done if Katie herself was happy with it...
"I discussed it with [Katie's mother] Bridget in the airport the other day, and I would say initially the reaction might be it's not something [Katie] would necessarily want happen at this stage."
However, he stressed that they'll work to find a solution that will work for everybody.
He said: "What we decided at Wicklow County Council yesterday was that the Cathaoirleach, Irene Winters, will talk to Katie and her family to see if there's some appropriate artwork - whether it's a statue, a mural or something else - that Katie would be happy with.
"[That would allow us] have a lasting reminder of her fantastic achievements at amateur and professional level - in due course, I'm sure we'll be able to do something appropriate that will satisfy Katie and the population of the town."
