The trial of a man accused of raping his sister-in-law has heard that the woman had bruising to her face, chest, nipples and thigh.

The trial also heard that the accused told gardai that the attack never happened and that his sister-in-law was a liar.

The 55-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to five counts of raping and assaulting the woman causing her harm on January 20, 2011 in County Kerry. He has also denied falsely imprisoning her.

On day seven of the trial a doctor from the sexual assault treatment unit in the South Infirmary Hospital in Cork city gave evidence of a physical examination carried out on the complainant the day after the alleged assault.

He said that his clinical findings were compatible with an assault. He said there was a big bruise on the right side of her cheek and other bruising on the face was consistent with a forceful punch and more, less forceful, punches to the face.

He found multiple bruises on her upper right breast and a five centimetre bruise on her right nipple and bruising over the left breast. There was also scratching on the chest across the collar bone.

The medical examination also found bruises on the right buttock and right thigh.

A week after the alleged assault gardai arrested the accused and he denied ever assaulting the woman.

He denied making the woman perform oral sex on him in her house or in a car, after tying a white curtain around her and pulling her into a car. He told gardai: “It never happened”.

He added: “She’s an awful woman for police and law. She will go to the police for the least of things. That woman is not the full shilling at all. The woman never told the truth in her life”.

He said he knew about a car that gardai allege he forced the woman into before sexually assaulting her. The accused denied bringing the car to a scrap dealer and selling it for scrap.

Gardai told the accused: “We have you on camera while the car was being crushed”.

The trial continues before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy and a jury of nine men and three women.
