Restaurant chain KFC is launching a vegan burger for Irish customers.

It is part of a new partnership with the delivery service Just Eat.

Vegans and would-be vegans across the country can order an Original Recipe meat-free burger.

The new offering features the very same herbs and spices as the usual chicken breast.

However the meat is replaced with a bespoke Quorn fillet, which is served with vegan mayonnaise and lettuce in a bun.

Ira Dubinsky, innovation director at KFC Ireland and UK, said: "The colonel was all about welcoming everyone to his table - now vegans, flexitarians and our fried chicken fans can all enjoy the taste of our Original Recipe together.

"We've worked hard to perfect the flavour and make a Vegan Burger the colonel would be proud of. It's the flavour of KFC, just with zero chicken."

Managing director of Just Eat Ireland, Amanda Roche Kelly, added: "We're starting the decade as we mean to go on, serving up even more choice, convenience and above all flavour to our Just Eat customers.

"Innovations like this one from KFC are changing the food game, so we're thrilled to be exclusively delivering this great tasting Original Recipe Vegan Burger to homes and offices right across Ireland."

The KFC Vegan Burger is available for delivery on Just Eat.

The US restarant chain is the latest to offer vegan alternatives of popular dishes.

Last November, Burger King introduced a plant-based 'Rebel Whopper' burger here.

The company had to find a different supplier because the US one, 'Impossible Foods', uses genetically modified ingredients.

These are not allowed under European Union rules.

Instead, Dutch company 'The Vegetarian Butcher' supplies the EU.

And just last month, McDonald's announced the launch of its first fully vegan meal in Ireland.
