Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes will serve a two-year driving ban from the 12th of June, after losing his appeal against a dangerous driving conviction.
The 26-year-old of Ballyashea, Kildimo, Limerick was originally convicted in September last year, after being caught driving 155 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone in Cork.
Garda Deirdre Barrett said Hayes overtook nine cars on a section of dual carriageway on the N20 Cork to Limerick Road on July 14th last year and asked to speak to a ‘higher ranking officer’ when she pulled him over.
State solicitor Jerry Healy asked the five-time All Ireland winner whether he considered driving more than 50% above the speed limit dangerous, to which Hayes said he did not.
Judge Helen Boyle said she was satisfied his driving was dangerous and upheld the conviction and €250 fine.
Kyle Hayes is due in court in Limerick in a week’s time where a decision may be made on whether a two-year suspended sentence he received for violent disorder in October 2019 will be activated due to the outcome of today’s case.
