The LÉ Eithne, which has been engaged in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean, is set to return to Ireland at the end of the month.
Thousands of men, women and children have been rescued by the crew of the LÉ Eithne as it assists the Italian authorities in their struggle with rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.
Defence Minister Simon Coveney told Newstalk Lunchtime that the LÉ Niamh will replace the Eithne, and will continue search and rescue operations in the area until September.
