Labour Councillor for Slane Eoin Holmes has been selected as the party's candidate for the upcoming by-election in Meath-East.

Addressing the selection convention this evening, Cllr Holmes said that as a self-employed small businessman he was aware of the challenges faced by all those trying to create and sustain employment in the current economic climate.

He said that he fully supported Labour’s focus in Government on addressing the jobs crisis and wanted to bring his experience to bear on those efforts.

Cllr Holmes commented, “First and foremost, this by-election is taking place in tragic circumstances. Shane McEntee was a true Meath-man – passionate about both his county and his work on behalf of its people. His good nature and warm personality are missed by all in the county.

The by-election was called following the death of former Junior Minister Shane McEntee and it will be held on March 27th.

Last night, Mr McEntee's daughter Helen was selected as Fine Gael's candidate.
