Law experts to discuss setting up Court of Appeal

A meeting of the country's leading law experts are meeting today to consider setting up a Court of Appeal, to take pressure off the Supreme Court.

The seminar in Dublin will be attended by the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter, the Chief Justice Susan Denham, and the Attorney General Máire Whelan.

Creating a Court of Appeal would require a change to the Constitution and would therefore need a referendum.

The Director General of the Law Society, Ken Murphy, says the Supreme Court cannot accept any more urgent cases this term, and non-urgent cases are taking up to four years to be heard:
