Lawyers for a group of women suing a cosmetic surgery clinic over allegedly defective breast implants are urging the High Court not to wind up the company.

The Harley Medical Group (Ireland) Ltd is seeking the appointment of a liquidator on grounds that it is insolvent.

The company ceased trading in Ireland last Autumn.

It is argued the Irish courts lack jurisdiction to wind up the company because its centre of main interest is the Virgin Islands.

Last month, one of the solicitors for the approximately 1,000 women who had industrial grade silicone placed in their bodies said it was time for the government to compensate the victims of the PIP breast implant scandal.

Healthcare solicitor Liam Moloney claimed the government is partly responsible for the scandal due to a lack of regulation at the time.

The Harley Medical Group, which carried out the majority of procedures in Ireland, applied to be wound-up in the High Court in March.
