A legal challenge against plans to build a major new visitor centre at the Hellfire Club in Dublin will be heard in the coming weeks.

The High Court yesterday granted the Hellfire Massy Residents Association (HMRA) a judicial review of An Bord Pleanála’s approval of the €15m plan.

The centre, located at the Massy’s Wood estate in the Dublin mountains, is expected to include a panoramic cafe, lounge, shop, toilets, changing facilities and education centre.

The HMRA has warned that the development would have a “profound” environmental impact on the surrounding area and has claimed that planners failed to consider the potential impacts on natural habitats and wild animals who live in the area.

The group said over 23,000 people have signed their petitions opposing the development.

On Twitter, the group said: “Great news. Four years of hard work and fundraising paying off.”

“We feel justified by this morning's decision to grant a Judicial Review on 10th Dec.

“Thank you to the over 23,000 who have supported us so far.”

The project is being developed by Coillte and the Dublin Mountains Partnership.

The Hell Fire Club is one of the Dublin Mountain’s best-known landmarks. Built in the mid-1700s, the building is a protected structure.
