The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will attend a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels for the final time today before he steps down next month.
Items on the agenda include the situation in Gaza, Ukraine and security and defence.
Leaders will also discuss European Union enlargement including the latest developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova.
It is expected Mr Varadkar will face more questions about his shock decision to resign.
He said his reasons for resigning as Taoiseach were 'both personal and political' in an emotional speech outside Leinster House yesterday.
Mr Varadkar is expected to update EU leaders about his bilateral meeting with US President Joe Biden last week.
The European Council will present him with a chance to make a final parting statement.
They will also have a lunch with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The system will see the 54 members of the Parliamentary Party accounting for 65% of the total vote, 20,000 party members making up 25% and 249 local representatives accounting for the remaining 10%.
