German discount retailer Lidl has announced plans to open its first pub on the island of Ireland.

The supermarket has lodged an application to open a licensed premises at its Dundonald store in Co Down.

The company says this will offer shoppers an off-licence service, along with a pub.

"As the fastest growing retailer in Northern Ireland we believe Dundonald shoppers should have the opportunity to access the same great value assortment currently enjoyed by thousands of shoppers in 37 other Lidl stores in Northern Ireland", it adds.

In its application, it suggests dividing and changing part of building from retail to a public house.

A new shop front would also be created.

Lidl opened its first Irish outlet back in July 2000.

Since then, it has opened over 190 stores across the island of Ireland.

Lidl has expanded throughout Europe - operating in over 30 countries - with more than 10,000 stores and 140 regional distribution centres.

In Ireland alone, the firm employs over 4,500 people nationwide.
