Five-time All-Ireland winning Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes’ case is due in court again in April after a judge said he will consider community service instead of a prison term.

The 26-year-old of Ballyashea, Kildimo, county Limerick appeared at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court today, where he faced the possibility of having a suspended two year jail term activated.

This case was before the court after Cork Circuit Appeals court upheld a conviction Hayes received for dangerous driving.

Defence Barrister Liam Carroll told Judge Dara Hayes that Kyle Hayes’ grandmother had died on Tuesday and her funeral was taking place today and tomorrow and said his client wished ‘to face the music today’.

Judge Dara Hayes outlined the dangerous driving case against the Limerick hurler, and said it was wholly different to the violent disorder conviction he received a year and one day ago.

He said 180 hours of community service would be more constructive than a three month jail sentence, and adjourned the case for a report from the probation service.
