A Limerick man has appeared before the High Court on a European Arrest Warrant from the UK where he is wanted for allegedly stealing a rhino horn.
26-year-old Michael Kealy of Abbeylands in Rathkeale is accused of robbing the valuable object from an antiques dealer in Newark on June 11th last year.
The court heard Mr. Kealy was arrested in a car park in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny at 7.45am this morning.
When informed he was being detained on a European Arrest Warrant he replied ‘I know what it’s about, I just witnessed the crime’.
He is contesting his extradition and will be granted bail when he lodges his own bond of €15,000.
It is understood 2 men stole the rhino horn from an antiques dealer having arranged to meet him in Newark last year.
The antiques dealer was injured as he gave chase and jumped into the gang’s car.
A single rhino-horn can have a value of up to €200,000.
He is due back in court on October 9th.
