One of the Aran Islands is looking for people to live there rent-free for a year.

Inis Meáin is looking for a family with school-age children to add to their community.

The Irish-speaking island also recently got a new remote working hub.

Dara O'Madaoin is manager of Comhlacht Forbartha on Inis Meáin.

He told The Hard Shoulder why they're doing this.

"We're looking for a family with children to move to Inis Meáin for an academic year to live as part of the community here to attend our schools.

"And we're happy to pay the rent for that family as well to stay here for that time".

He says the idea would be to take hosing pressures off the family, and in-turn add to the island's community.

"I think it would really be a win-win situation for everyone involved".

He says it can be any type of family.

"We're taking applications from all families, families of any size and make-up are welcome.

"We've been offered a couple of houses from people here on the island, so we're in a great position where we can kind of look at all the applications and see which house and which family would best suit the situation".

And what about the cúpla focal?

"It's no harm if they do - if they're fluent Irish speakers that's great. This is a thriving Irish-speaking community.

"But I suppose as long as they an affection to the language and are open to the language - and open to being part of a community where Irish is still the everyday language and the first language of the majority of the population - then that's all we really ask".

But Dara says there is a caveat around transport.

"There can be times where... the weather can be bad, then you might be stuck here for a day or two.

"Any family applying will have to think about the fact that they're not just going to be able to hop into the car and go wherever they want.

"There might be days when the weather is bad and the boat can't sail, or the airplane can't come - and that's part of life here."

Interested parties can apply to Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin via their e-mail: cfinismeain@gmail.com Applications close on August 10th.
