A Co Donegal community is “shocked and saddened” after a father and son were found dead yesterday.
The bodies were discovered in a house in the Letterkenny area, with the deaths being treated as a suspected murder-suicide.
The father and son, aged 88 and 50, were found by a local person on Thursday afternoon.
Jimmy Kavanagh, Mayor of Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District councillor, spoke to Newstalk Breakfast about the tragedy.
He said: “The community is totally shocked and saddened by what has happened.
“It’s Christmas Eve and that has heightened the sadness of the whole event… the fact that Christmas is such a family time.”
He said the hearts of “everyone in the community” go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
Cllr Kavanagh said both men were well-known and well-liked people “who got on with everyone”.
He said: “They were a highly respected family.
“There’s great sadness in the area about it. Something obviously went tragically wrong.
“This is something that came totally out of the blue.”
Cllr Kavanagh added that the local community will come together in whichever way they can to support those affected by the tragedy.
