A teenager in Longford has died after he was hit by a bus on the Convent Road at six o’clock on Thursday evening.
Martin McDonnell was 19-years-old and a post-mortem examination will take place later today.
Longford Leader journalist Liam Cosgrove was at the scene moments after the crash happened.
“I was immediately met by a number of Gardaí who were at the scene,” he recalled.
“[They] started cordoning off the area and I was just basically told not to take any pictures.
“I asked a Guard what happened and he told me there had been a fatality and it looked like a young man - but they couldn’t tell at that stage because it was only after happening.”
It is understood that Mr McDonnell was a Longford local and his older brother died last year in a road accident as well.
“I think [the mood of the town] is one of shock,” Mr Cosgrave said.
“People are just wondering what happened; there’s a lot of questions as to how it happened because it’s a part of the town where traffic wouldn’t be going at a great speed.
“This involved a bus… which was turning into a junction which leads into Longford bus station.”
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
