Loop Head Peninsula in Co. Clare has been named 'Best Place to Holiday in Ireland' by Irish Times readers. The competition has been running since March. It saw members of the public nominate the places they love to holiday.

The newspaper received over 1,400 entries from members of the public.

Declaring Loop Head as the best place for a staycation, judges said it came out on top due to its majestic cliffs, pretty beaches and a landscape that remains uncluttered by development.

They went on to state that the local people's attitude to the landscape makes the place special adding it was "time-machine tourism, a place that looks like 1970's Ireland, yet buzzes with 21st-century inventiveness".

Secondary prizes were presented to Killarney as Best Holiday Town, Derry for Best City Holiday while Best Island Holiday titles went to Inishbofin and the Glen of Aherlow in Tipperary.

Cillian Murphy is chairman of Loop Head Tourism and owner Murphy Black's restaurant in Kilkee. He gave his reaction to winning the award.
