style="font-weight: bold;">The Integration Centre says it will make a formal complaint to the Gardaí after a District Court judge commented that the social welfare system is a “Polish charity”.
Judge Mary Devins made the remarks at a sentencing hearing last week at Claremorris District Court.
In a statement last night Judge Devins said no offence was intended and apologised if any insult was taken from her comments.
But the Integration Centre says her comments were “false, bigoted and borderline racist”.
CEO of the Centre is Killian Forde.
He says a formal complaint will be lodged with the Gardaí this afternoon.
“We are going to make a formal complaint to the Gardaí under the racist reporting mechanism that was set up by the guards” he said.
“We’ll be doing that in the city centre after lunch today”.
“We hope that Gardaí would look at the possibility that she is in breach of the Prohibition of Incitement To Hatred Act from 1989″.
“Our reading of the Act would be that she has breached section 2, and therefore would be liable to prosecution” he added.
New offences for drivers who fail to use seatbelts or the correct restraints on passengers and children in their cars will come into effect from midnight tonight.
Drivers face 2 penalty points and a fine for putting their child in the front of a car in a rear facing seat and if they do not have their child in “an appropriate child restraint” such as a child or booster seat.
These 7 new offences bring to 48 the number of offences for which drivers can get penalty points.
Ryanair has announced 5 new routes from Cork to Poland and Lithuania.
The budget airline has launched a price war against WizzAir which already operates to the destinations involved.
Ryanair says it will base a second aircraft in Cork from November in a move which will sustain 800 jobs at the airport.
Ryanair deputy chief executive Michael Cawley admits they are undercutting WizzAir but denies trying to muscle them off the routes.
“We’re going to stimulate the market to levels that is appropriate at the correct fare” he said.
“The correct fare to charge here is 6.99 or 9.99 – depending on the destination – and that’s what we’ll be offering here”.
“We will see the market dramatically grow and we’ll put on more capacity if the demand is there” he added.
